Electrical Mathematics
Here you can find resources for the unit UEENEEE026B Provide computational solutions to basic engineering problems. A good book to study this unit is:
Alldis, B. and Kelly, V. “Mathematics for Technicians” (2012) , McGraw Hill, Australia, 7th ed.
It contains a lot of useful example and exercises, which will help you to obtain competency in this unit quicker. However, purchasing the book is not compulsory. The purpose of this website is to guide you in your efforts to improve your mathematical abilities without the need to spend too much money.
Usually, the students enrolled in this unit are considered competent once they perform satisfactory in five written tests. This may seem daunting, but it is not as bad as it looks. The tests are fairly simple, especially the first ones. With each subsequent test, the difficulty increases slightly. Usually, the topics are taught over one semester (20 weeks). However, if students are enrolled in flexible delivery classes, they can progress as quickly or as slowly as they wish and could. The shortest possible way to demonstrate competency for this unit is if you sit one test per week; i.e. in the best case scenario, you could be done in 5 weeks.
Here you can find five trial tests. First open Electrical Mathematics Trial Test 1 (given below) and try to solve it by yourself. You can use the book or other relevant materials. Do not forget to show your calculations step by step. For the first test no calculator is permitted. A calculator can only be used in the last 5 minutes of the test, in order to answer the very last question. After you are ready you can open the next file, containing the solutions for this trial test. It will give you an indication on how you are expected to answer those types of problems in the real test. Once you feel ready that you can pass test 1, you can turn up in the Institute at the date and time allocated for your flexible delivery classes. Then you will be given the real test.
The duration of our examinations is one hour and a half. Once you have successfully passed the first test, you can go home and you can start preparing in a similar way for the second one. Then, once you have passed the second test you can start preparing for the third one and so on. You are allowed two attempts per test. After two unsuccessful attempts to pass the same test, you will have to re-enroll for this unit. However, you may still be eligible for RPL (recognition for prior learning) and may not need to repeat tests, which you have already demonstrated competency in.
From this page you can download all the trial tests and solutions you need. Of course, you cannot expect that on the real test you will have exactly the same problems. The numbers may be different, however, in essence the test will be very similar to what is given to you here. You are not expected to know anything over and above what is given to you in the trail tests or the examples in the text book (your coursework). There will be no surprises. Once you have successfully passed all five tests you will be deemed competent for this unit and your academic record will be updated accordingly.
To prepare successfully for the test, please download the relevant test, print it and try your best to answer all the questions in the blank spaces provided. Then download the solutions, print it and compare your work with the given answers. Mark yourself objectively. Your answers should be identical to the given solutions.
